Statoil see the need to mature the service delivery within O&M. Our experience with wind started in 2001 and we have identified substantial improvement opportunities. Given the current market conditions we see value creation potential in taking control of the O&M activity at site and have a team of own technicians that work closely with the OEM in the warranty period. This gives us real strategic options when it comes to possible renewal of the O&M contracts and it will enable optimal value creation for our owners in a lifetime perspective.
Our main reasons for entering into the O2O network is first of all to share experience from operation and learn from other operators. Compared to other industries, wind still has some teething issues that are difficult to change when we operate in isolation. We see the need to move maintenance of wind assets in a direction of condition based and less time based. We experience that the OEMs show little interest in contributing to realising a lower cost of electricity. By sharing experience the O2O network can help us be more aware of trends in failures as the wind turbine generator matures, and ultimately help us to act in a more preventive manner.

Our strategy as a new turbine operator, in a market where we see huge technical risks, has been to sign up for long term service agreements with Energy Based Availability where OEMs take on risk. This has given us a low foreseeable costs and right focus on the production. Our top priority is of course HSE, but we focus on managing our agreements, analyzing operational and performance data to push KPIs in right direction. This helps us bringing down LCoE and lost production.
Stena Renewable believes collaboration is an important key to increased production and reduction of lost production and LCoE in our wind power assets. Akuo’s wind farms are still young, with the oldest ones barely exceeding the 10 year milestone. Also, as part of our project financing strategy, a full scope O&M contract is typically required by the lenders and/or the shareholders to keep a reasonable risk profile. As such, most of our turbines are maintained by the OEM under the initial O&M contract. Despite that, one of our long-term objectives is to be able to select and implement the optimal O&M strategy once these initial constraints are lifted. We have therefore taken over the maintenance of three wind farms in France where we work hand in hand with ISPs to provide the best possible service to our turbines, in order to gain knowledge and experience in this specific area and become less dependent on the OEMs.

We try to keep know-how in house and in the same time to have a good relation with turbine manufacturer for improvement of efficiency and performance of the turbines. We are in the process of defining a long term O&M Strategy. We started to communicate more often with parts manufacturers to have a different opinion on root cause analysis.
We operate our wind farm for more than 4 years now and we believe that we can share many of ours experiences, but also we need to learn more about the new and challenging ones.

Meridian is a owner, operator and maintainer of wind farms in New Zealand and Australia. We perform in-house maintenance on the majority of wind farms but have also entered into long term service & availability contracts with the OEMs on others. The decision to go in-house or not is made on a case by case basis to achieve best long term returns.
Meridian is always striving to improve turbine performance and we see knowledge sharing between wind turbine owners as very important to that process. This includes sharing of specific component failures, parts/tools procurement or contractual challenges.

Energia’s main goal is to maintain a high level of availability from our assets which in turns increases the overall energy yield. This involves a close relationship with the various OEM’s to ensure a preventative approach to service and troubleshooting is achieved rather than a corrective approach which in turn leads to greater turbine downtime and subsequently a higher level of faults.

Energia believe a forum like O2O is a great way to share information on our experiences gained through operating a fleet of varying turbine types. Also other O2O member’s knowledge could help us in understanding/preventing Energia incurring the same issues in the future on our fleet.
Current challenges that I want to solve
Presently my main challenges is extend the scope of predictive analysis in Wind industry at same level as developed in other technologies, i.e. not only aimed to prevent failures, but mainly to reduce maintenance activities of turbines by increasing life of single components.

With the sun gone from mid-November to mid-February, -25 Celsius and with speeds often greater than 50 m/s we have adapted a steep learning curve. From the outside our 15 Nordex N80 at Havøygavlen looks the same but the technology inside has been radically altered. In 2004 our availability was at 72% but now we are above 95%.
Ambitions with O2O WIND
Sharing with knowledgeable friend in the industry is a rarity for us above the polar circle but we hope that will change with O2O WIND. With finance just being secured for our latest investment I know that the next months will be busy. Although I do believe that we have a lot of extreme experiences and interesting solutions to share and I have also discovered that many of our toughest issues are very similar to the issues fought by owners in more normal conditions.

Our current approach is to enter into longer term production based O&M contracts with our WTG suppliers. We operate with a relatively lean organisation. Our approach is to develop long term stable relationships based on gain/pain share. We maintain a small but highly competent in-house team that has capabilities in construction, mechanical and electrical engineering, together with data analytics capability.
NTR is keen to learn and share information with other operators in the wind business. Most of our engineers come from a utilities background and are familiar and comfortable working with peers from other companies.

Synergy currently operates approximately 50 MW of wind turbines which are mostly Enercon machines. We also have Vestas and Vergnet machines.
Within the Generation business unit our strategy for the renewables stream is to support the commercial development of large scale centralized renewables by providing engineering expertise, project management skills, technical capabilities and development of O&M strategies. Our main focus is to achieve safe, low cost and sustainable generation.

Long term strategy suggests having a secured level of steady energy production over the long-term full service agreement based on mutually-benefited relationship with Vestas. Mid-term O&M strategy aims to develop internal expertise in scheduled maintenance and out of scope additional services i) to decrease maintenance costs at the group of companies level; ii) to assure an internal baseline maintenance of the wind farm fleet in case of force-major events affecting the full service agreement occur.
We believe that our experience in implementing of wind projects is quite unique and it can be useful for other members of 020 Wind. On the other hand having access to collective experience is a great value that permits using and spreading the best industry practices on our emerging market.

Vasa Vind have long term service agreements with availability guarantees with OEMs. However, we see a great advantage in being locally active ourselves. We therefore have employees at all our sites who are responsible for coordination of works, but also making it possible to follow the work that is being done.
We strive to use local entrepreneurs as much as possible. We have established good relationships which improves the outcome, but also increases the acceptance of wind power locally.
By collaborating with other peers, we hope to improve our operation. Sharing experiences and good examples will improve production but also strengthen our work with HSE-matters.
Unfortunately, we see growing efforts by the OEMs on claiming that service/unavailability/fixing design errors etc. are out-of-scope. By sharing experiences, we also hope to counter these OEM strategies.
