14 energy companies developing in-house concepts at Iberdrola's Campus in Madrid

Monday and Tuesday this week, we gathered the top directors within operations from Akuo Energy, Boralex, Borusan EnBW, EDPR, Enefit Green, Enel, Enerjisa Uretim, Equinor, Iberdrola, Naturgy, Renantis, RWE, Vattenfall and Ventient at Iberdrola Innovation & Training Campus in Madrid.

Nine new initiatives were shaped, and we shared experiences on the 25 challenges the WTG owners sent in before the meeting.

The nine new initiatives:

Putting the MWs on the table

Each company has one or two turbine platforms they are focusing on to take in-house. We selected five turbine platforms that have good matches within this group. These four smaller groups will put their MWs on the table to develop ISPs, get improved access to SCADA and collaborate on documentation. Doodles has been sent out.

What is the right amount of people (owner's personnel) per MW to supervise a wind farm?

This came up as a spontaneous discussion at the meeting. It created many discussions, and one of the bigger WTG owners has taken the lead on this and will produce an agenda of KPIs they would like to discuss and compare in an additional meeting.

Enabling an exchange of components

We'll make a tool that helps wind turbine owners find others who might have the needed parts. You input your spare parts info, and the tool shows which turbines use that part and a map of matching wind farms. You choose who to contact nearby or everyone. The tool connects you with potential part suppliers, and deals happen directly between turbine owners, with no O2O WIND involvement.

A portal to match WTG owners and ISPs

Turbine owners want more service competition. They're considering offering more MWs to encourage independent service providers. The idea came up at a directors' meeting in Rome hosted by Enel. Our developer is almost done with the tool, and it will soon be available on the O2O WIND app. The map shows Gamesa G52-850 wind farms (green dots) owned by meeting participants in Madrid, and blue dots are independent service providers for that model.

A wind service portal

Turbine owners will share supplier info like names, services, and contacts. We'll make a central list for searching suppliers by category and country. It's open for all turbine owners and suppliers to join, growing it organically with more suppliers and more detailed information from each supplier over time.

The 25 challenges that the WTG owners sent in before the meeting:

At the meeting, we had 25 different challenges sent in before the meeting. These challenges were within the following categories:

  • Main component repairs and exchanges: ISP capabilities, documentation, tools, training
  • Limited access to technical documentation
  • SCADA & Controller
  • SCADA and Controller access levels
  • WTG controllers software replacement
  • Comparing how we repair blades
  • LPS maintenance and lightning damages
  • Supply Chain
  • Enabling an exchange of components
  • Getting good access to parts and documentation
  • Major component supply chain – long lead times /spare part pool possibilities
  • Spare part supply chain and refurbishment options
  • Major components supply
  • CMMS tools
  • Failure rate increase for the aged units

Could this be valuable for your company?

Working in collaboration means that we can do things faster, cheaper and with increased leverage. We are open to including additional companies. However, we want to be among net providers and have WTG owners with in-house concepts in their O&M strategy.

To determine if there are mutual benefits to adding your company, I suggest an efficient 15-minute meeting. Please access my calendar using the link below and pick a suitable time slot.
